Hints and Advice

1. Travel Lite
Japanese Trains and buses do not have a lot of luggage storage. If your Hakuba vacation is part of a large Japan trip, then it is a good idea to make use of the Japanese courier services.
If you have a few days in Tokyo on arrival, then send all your ski gear up to your hotel in Hakuba from the airport, or do the reverse if you have scheduled a bit of a side trip after leaving Myoko.
The courier services are very reliable and it make travelling on public transport in Japan a breeze.
2. Carry Extra Cash
Credit Cards are still not as widely accepted in Japan as they are in the West. This is even more so the case in the remote rural areas like Hakuba.
Japan is a very safe country to travel in and many Japanese carry large amounts of cash on them without given it a 2nd thought.
3. Don't Lose your Cool
If you find yourself in a difficult situation, stay calm, and maintain a postive attitude. You'll get a much better result if you are polite and respectful.
People with a short fuse do not do very well in Japan!
4. DO NOT get offside with the Law
While Japan is low crime society (or at least visible crime is difficult to spot), if you get on the wrong side of the law, you are in for a lot of trouble.
Japanese Police have the power to hold you without charge for up to 3 weeks, and they are prone to using all the time they have their disposal.
Unlike the West, they do not have to get you a lawyer, or even give you a phone call. They also check every single part of your story, and will be out interviewing all the people you are travelling with, as well as your accommodation hosts, and anyone else they think is involved.
Not only will the experience be shattering emotionally, it may well lead to your being deported, and being banned from ever entering Japan again.
Remember that you are not allowed to have any Alcohol in your body if you are driving a car. The limit is zero! And the penalties for drink driving are severe.
